Lesson Plan: Stars (Reading - GR K)

Lesson Objective: To read the book, How to Catch a Star, and then answer questions about the book

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Have you ever laid outside and looked up at the sky when it was dark?  What did you see?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Many people enjoy laying outside and looking up at the stars.  Some people try to look for shooting stars, some enjoy counting stars and some try to find constellations. 
  • It is amazing to lay outside and look up at the millions of stars in the sky. 
  • Have you ever thought about what it would be like to go up into space?   Or have you ever thought about what it would be like to touch a star?
  • These are things that people think about and dream about.
  • Today, we are going to listen to a book called, How to Catch a Star.  This book is about a boy who really wants to catch a star to have for his very own.
  • Do you think it is possible to catch a star?  Why or why not?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • We are going to listen to the book and find out how the boy tries to catch a star and what he accomplishes at the end.
  • After you listen to the book, we are going to do a worksheet together.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
